National Association of State Treasurers Bond Letter Request

1/15/2016

The National Association of State Treasurers (NAST) are requesting grassroots signatures for a pro tax-exempt bond letter. The letter is here.

NAST explains:
“Our first effort is to send the attached letter in support of the current tax treatment of municipal bonds. Our hope is to have not only associations, but also – and perhaps more importantly – individual public sector officials from around the country be they governors, mayors, other statewide elected officials, county commissioners or members of other governmental boards join the letter. We believe that such a letter, hopefully with hundreds of signatures, will generate additional media attention to the issue and serve as a reminder that changes to this program will be met with opposition from the states. To date, 38 state treasurers and 92 total officials have agreed to sign. “

You will note the otherwise fine letter doesn’t mention hospitals but does mention higher education. This is an inadvertent omission but since so many  public officials already have signed NAST doesn’t want to revise and go back to them.

NAST is looking for  signatures from not only NAHEFFA but authority ED’s or  board chairs. If you are willing to let them add your name please let me know by January 22.

Bond Buyer Article On Tax Reform In 2016

1/4/2016

The Bond Buyer recently released Outlook: Tax Reform Bill Unlikely But Muni Market Must Remain Vigilant. The article concerns the prospects of tax reform legislation being passed by Congress in 2016. The consensus among the tax policy experts quoted in the article appears to be major tax reform legislation will not pass both houses of Congress.  We nonetheless should be vigilant in our efforts to ensure tax-exempt bonds are protected and defended throughout the debate in the House of Representatives where Speaker Ryan seems focused on tax reform as a priority in 2016.
